Diseased Acer ID please ?

Hi,  a friend of mine has got a three year old Acer that's died, don't know much about the background and history of the tree unfortunately.  Can anyone have a stab at what's caused this please ?  I suspect Honey Fungus but confirmation or otherwise would be great thank you !

  • Hard to tell just from that photo. Does the bark peeling go right to the ground? Look around the bottom and roots for mycelium and a strong smell of mushrooms under the bark. I would suspect a different canker over honey fungus although the White is symptomatic of honey. Any other plants in the garden effected?

Thanks Jon, sorry not seen it in person just got sent the photos but will be heading over there at the weekend.  Will check out for mycelium when I visit.  No other plants affected as far as I know.

Thanks Tom - I always fear the worst !  so canker then maybe ?

  • Perhaps mechanical damage initially ... strimmer, mower, rabbits, cats and so on?  Fungal infection is then secondary.

Looks terminal to me if bark has gone all the way round.

That's what I was thinking John, it was terminal :(

What do the leaves look like? any left ? Its not looking too healthy! The patterns on the trunk indicate an insect/ borer - this may have opened it up to a fungal attack....

lol it's dead as a door nail !  They're just after advice to stop a replacement going the same way.

  • Do deer get into the garden?
Have seen similar damage caused by deer rubbing velvet of antlers.
  • The bottom part of the trunk looks thicker. Maybe strimmer damage as the grass is growing all the way up to the trunk. Then secondary damage through fungus, canker or insects. I have seen squirrels strip bark from a tree as well in winter looking for food, but this may not be it. I think its fungus or canker as a secondary issue. Honey fungus has a sweet smell to it.
