Did he really do that?!

On Friday, we trotted off to the golf club and shared our works Christmas Lunch and drinks with the guys from a local building company.  As the afternoon wore on, stories were being re-told of the 'I can't believe ANYONE would do that' variety. Which got me thinking, as we have a week or twos break, what have you had happen? What have you seen?  What has a new starter done, that makes you stand and shake your head in disbelief?!

Must admit, that in almost 40 years, I’ve seen plenty, but here’s a nice little gentle one:

I took on an 18 year old one summer just before he went to University.  On his first day, we collected a shrink wrapped pack of 40No 450 x 450 slabs on the tipper.  When we arrived on site, I asked him to grab a barrow and wheel the slabs round the back of the house.  10 mins later, he sheepishly came round the corner and said “really sorry but I’m not up to this sort of work, the slabs are too heavy for me”.  Yup, he had been trying to wrap his arms round the 1 ton pack and lift them off in one go!  Good lesson for me – don’t take ANYTHING for granted!

By the way, he was a great lad, good worker and good fun……….he is around 40 now and a GP with his own practice!

    Lol:)

I can tell many a tale too.

We were putting up a horse shelter and needed to concrete in the four posts. Unfortunately the job was over 200 metres from the mixing area and we had no way of transporting the drylene mix in one go, so it hand to be barrowed by hand to the required area.

I asked one of my guys to go and mix up a barrow of load of 4:1.

He literally held me to my word and came back with the barrow only one-third full:)
