Day to day morning start time.

Have been considering a later start time in the mornings and wanted your views, since I was 16 I have been starting work at 7:30am, now it's over 20 years down the line I'm thinking of changing the start time of the first job of the day to 8:30am, I've always started early to beat the traffic and finish earlier in the evenings etc, but think it's time for a change, I can't see it being a big problem unless it all goes wrong and I need to change back to a 7:30 start, some of my clients may not wish to, what are your views on this topic, also what are your start times to be onsite ready to rock????Cheers Harry

Forgot to add, I only do private garden maintenance and landscaping etc, I don't work on commercial projects...
  • I am always at my first job and ready to start, summer or winter, for 8am. I always prefer a good start to the day. During the summer if i know a customer is away on holidays, i start at 6.30 or 7am when I know I won't be disturbing them.
  • 8am for me to.  However I do have one job that I start at 7.30 but that's purely because 3.30 seems like an early finish.

  • Our hours are 7.30 - 4.30, which gives a 40 hour week.  By the time we have loaded up, its on the road by 7.50.  All of our contracts are within 7 miles of base, but during term time it;s a MUST, we get on the road before 8am!!

    • Its surprising how much of a difference schools make to the traffic.

in the summer months we start at 7.45 am when i collect my business partner so we can get to first job for 8am but during winter months we ve been starting later to 8.30 am

Yeah the school run is a nightmare and the major reason I start earlier, I only work in a 8 mile radius of my front door also, I am thinking leave at 8:00am start for 8:30 taking into account the extra in traffic, I will probably get up same time in the morning but the idea behind my thinking is to give me a little breathing space, rather than rushing around or getting up earlier. even after this long I'm not a morning person lol
    • I reckon you will soon get fed up with sitting in traffic when you could be working, Harry!  One of our days round starts about 4 miles away.  If we leave at 8am we will be there by 8.15.  If we leave at 8.15, we will be lucky to get there by 9am!  By then I need a cup of tea to calm down - more time gone!!

Yes there is a fine line to be picked when trying to beat the traffic, I know 5-10 mins late can make 30mins on your journey time, maybe I will try leaving lockup by 7:45, that gives me an extra 45 mins in the morning and will hopefully beat the worst of the traffic, the problem is that there is only 2 roads everyone can drive on to get to Ascot area so it's not like I can cut through the back roads and beat the morning or evening traffic, oh how I hate commuting ...

I start at 8am, usually say on site at 7.45. Beat all the traffic, I make sure my first job of the day will take me past morning rush hour. Can't stand sitting in traffic. Now it's starting to get lighter earlier is easier to be motivated to leave in the morning!
