Cutting/recutting new Lawn Edges

I have a batch of lawn edging to do. I don't mean clipping the grass but cutting new nice deep edges.  A couple involve long straight runs.  I am about to get the line & plank out but has anyone discovered some clever tricks to make it easier.  For example marking along the line so that you can remove it before you cut.

PS Anyone tried a laser ?

I've not tried it but how about one of those chalk lines you can get with blue chalk?
I hate trying to get long straight bits looking straight!
Let me know if you find a good way

The Stihl edger attachment cuts a new edge, if you want to trim grass you can use them, a strimmer on edge or side shears

We also have one of Victa 3 wheel edgers which is good when doing long stretches with open access.

However, I reckon a string line, a good half moon edger ( bulldog pro one) and scaffold plank gives the neatest effect and can be surprisingly quick to do.
      • I found the attachment more trouble than it's worth.  A fast spinning steel blade & stoney ground isn't a good mix.

  • I had a Husky one - just like the Stihl combi witha metal blade. I hardly ever used it. They are meant to trim, not cut new edges.  Edging shears are best because they get under the grass & they don't throw it everywhere.

I remember seeing a demo of a laser guided one - that didn't work either.

The problem is that a long line will distort if you use it as a guide. Ideally you need a very long plank but that's impractical to carry.  Maybe a couple of planks that bolt together ?

Maybe 2 or 3 scaffold planks chopped in to bits and connected somehow like Peter said. You can get condemned ones cheap

Depending on the length, I run down with a strimmer to mark the line by eye, have a look, tweak where needed and use a half moon to cut.  Depending on the circumstances, as long as the start and end are in the right place, you can strim a bit more or a bit less off each time you come until it is acceptable.

For really long runs I use string, held down with house bricks and cut along in sections pulling it tight again as you do each section.

  • I've looked into getting one of these bad lads, but from what I understand they are only available in the US! Nice bit of kit by the look of it though.. worth shipping over to the UK maybe?

    • There was something similar as a strimmer head.  Maybe Stihl could make one for the combi.  I can't imagine it lasting long with our stones.

    • I think my local machinery dealer has that.

      Maybe Here ?

Landscape Blade Multi Tool Attachment - brief product overview :

"No flying debris, “Drop where you Chop” – stop the cost of breakages and repairs and enable safe working close to pedestrians, cars, windows, and solar panels, even in gravel, bark and other loose surfaces with total confidence.

Underwater cutting – clear water courses and reeds by submerging the head

No damage to trees, planting and street furniture – a visible and fixed width cutting radius and reduced centrifugal pull means reduced cost to tree care, increased plant life and reduced damage to furniture

Edging beds, bunkers, lawns, water courses – shaving soil and sand surfaces whilst cutting grass, delivering a smooth, clean and quick cut with the minimum effort

Cut brambles and scrub – the sharpened blades with increased torque means that you can cut thicker scrub and brush without changing or replacing wire.

Available as an attachment for the Multi Tool system or as a dedicated 30cc unit"
