Conducting insurance work (i.e. For claims)

Hi all,Firstly a merry Christmas to all members!I am looking for a bit of guidance into the world of insurance claims.If a customers fence was to blow down or be damaged in the high winds and needed repaired, they contact their insurance company and claim for the work to be done....How do we go about doing this type of work? Is there anything we need in place or do we just conduct the work as normal then the insurance company pays us?How does it work?Thanks in advance

  • From my experienc the client will pay you and they will deal with the claim and receive the money. Normally the insurance company will ask for 3x quotes and give the client a payment based on the prices quoted. I think it all depends on the value. If it's a high value or commercial the insurance company might pay the you direct.

    As far as I'm aware most home insurance policies don't cover garden fences

        I seem to remember about 5-6 years ago we had a storm and literally hundreds of fences fell over over a ten mile radius. I did loads and no one that I dealt with was covered on their insurance
        • Yeah I have just done a quick search and found out that most only cover for impact not STORM damage.

          The reason we are looking at this is we up here in Glasgow are currently experiencing 70-90mph winds so we see January and February being a busy period.
          Got to love a storm for this type of business haha.

            • That's good to know Richard, it's good to get talking to local people on here to get their "area related" opinions as well.

              I know we was out til 5pm yesterday giving quotes and back out to work on Tuesday... a day of rest is much appreciated hah.

  • Too many get out clauses as to if the fence was maintained if covered at all.... always invoice the customer directly with your payment terms... Your contract is then with them directly.. That leaves it up to them to battle the insurance company. Even if they do pay up it will take months to get the money.... There is technicalities in invoicing insurance companies.. If they did not commission you they have no liability to pay you and in court you might struggle to get paid from the customer who did commission you because you have accepted that your contract is not with them if you have invoiced a third party...
