commercial grass cutting.

HiI currently have a john deere 997 rear discharge with mulching blades which we use on larger commercial jobs. Now, it's a great machine i.e fast, maneuverable, reliable etc. but I often wonder if I could get a better finish wth a side discharge maybe with mulching blades. What do guys use who cut commercially and who want a decent finish?

  • I dont do anything that big or use anything that big but regular cutting is the first thing! Fortnightly cutting with my 30" mulcher is fine, great finish!

    side discharge gives a good finish on regular cut but anything else it really doesn't look good.

    Often depends on Contract specification.

    Only one way to get a truely decend finish and that is to collect, but the reality of many sites means it's simply discharged (either side or rear).

    Then it becomes an issue of frequency;

    If visits are often, then mulching or discharge can work.

    If visits are not often and you mulch you can end up blocking the deck and getting clumps.

    If visits are not often and you discharge you can get windrows or clumps of decaying grass unless you walk around after and disperse with blowers.

    However, working out the best cutting pattern with letting fly helps....

  • Thanks for the replys, I see john deere do a mulch on demand, maybe this is an option worth looking at. Don't know if they are used much in this part of world or are they more suited to the US. Any ideas?

    I've been led to believe that side discharge with mulching blades is worse because the deck cant blow the clippings down into the turf as well as not blowing them out the side as far as high lift blades. If your experience with side discharge is using mulching blades I'd personally say reconsider the method.

  • Really depends on the finish, We use scags and if required we disperse the clippings with blowers, if its dry enough the scag disperses the cuttings itself.
