But why not landscapers?

Electricians are earning as much as £3,000 a week as they cash in on a chronic shortage of skilled workers across the country.

That amounts to £156,000 a year – around six times the average wage and more than the £150,000 earned by the Prime Minister.

Plumbers and bricklayers are also benefiting, with wages rising by as much as 10 per cent in the past 12 months.

Plumbers can earn as much as £2,000 a week, while brickies can bring home £1,125 – more than £50,000 a year.

The pay bonanza, revealed by recruitment firm Manpower, comes amid increasing demand for new homes across the country at a time when skilled workers are in short supply.

Is that the cause of your long term back problems Phil?

        • PRO
No, that was caused by a Nissan Cabstar that didn't have power steering.

Ahhh, Nissan Cabstar, a classic in its own right....;-)
            • We love our Cabstar tipper, bought new in 2003, still on same engine and gearbox and going strong 14 years on -  owes me nothing.

  • Another fact to think about is that when the recession came along, brick layers, electricians etc etc became underemployed or unemployed and turned their hand to landscape maintenance causing a higher rate of competition in an already competitive market. Now that those trades are back in demand it may produce a labour shortage in the landscape industry, and therefore wages and prices may have to rise as demand increases.

When discussing electricians rates, particularly London rates, Plimlico Plumbers is generally brought into the discussion.

However their highest earning guys are generally the drain unblockers, quick jobs usually without even entering the customers home.

Personally I think the Uk landscape industry needs to take a leaf out of the American landscape industry. Over there the national association of professional landscapers, formerly PLANET. They have effectively introduced a landscape equivalent of gas safe as a result the rates of pay in the industry have increased and customer image of the green industries has improved.
