Building a wall

I have asked a local business to quote me to build a wall at the back of my house. It is 28m long and over a metre high. There will be drainage holes to allow water to drain away. A soak away pipe will be laid at the bottom with chippings as well as Terram Mattings. The wall will be build along side a lane and planning permission has been granted.Just out of interest what sort of figures would you expect to pay? Is the soakaway pipe and terram matting excessive or necessary? He said he allowed 4 weeks to build this wall.Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Will it be single block and render?
    • Yes. Should have added that information. Single block and then rendered.
  • 4 weeks seems a bit much, but depends on how many men are working. What’s on the ‘topside’ of the wall? Soil? It will be important to have a gravel drain ( or similar method ) on this side, and I’d also treat the blocks with a coat of Black Jack bitumen for longevity. The soakaway pipe may be unnecessary on the base, but it won’t do any harm, so do it for peace of mind!
    • Thanks Sean for your feedback. I think 4 weeks is a long time too for two men with ease of access.

Plus half a metre of blockwork and a concrete footing underneath it?

    • Yes concrete footing with at least 2 foot blocks. Thanks
  • Interested to see the price range on this. We would be £6500 approx (Scottish prices!) and 2 men 10 days.
    • I must admit I thought 15 days absolutely max. Materials are expensive. Been quoted £9k...... (Devon Prices!)
      • A nice working holiday! Iwill get my quote in!
