A new HSE Regulatory update confirms blanket spraying of pesticides on hard surfaces is now illegal.
.

New Label requirements for pesticides that are approved for use of non-porous hard surfaces were issued by the Chemical Regulation Directorate under a new update number 42/2011.

The wordings on product labels for 'directions for use' which any qualified spraying operative is required to follow now clearly state that applications to hard surfaces must be 'targeted' rather than 'blanket'.

Otherwise the operative is in contravention of the product label and thus acting illegal under UK Legislation.

All product labels on such pesticide must be updated by May 2012 by the latest although 'update' stickers' may be applied to current supplier stock.

I know from comments on LJN many of us realise this already and may only be applicable to those performing Grounds Care or large hard area maintenance (ie not the typical domestic garden unless they have large paved, concreted or tarmac'd driveways).

I've a guy on PA1/PA6 training this week and this subject came up, which we were discussing when he got back this afternoon.

Worth bumping and also asking for any other input/updates

Good reminder Gary - hard surface run off is the biggest single cause of water contamination.

The Water Framework Directive is driving a lot of change to pesticides with new, lower detection levels and harsher fines for water companies - meaning more & more active ingredients are being scrutinised - the only delay being the backlog at the CRD.

Its always good to spread the message about professional, responsible use of pesticides

The cowboy brigade will still be out there doing it....just like they spray with no certificate, it would HELP if it was made legal that to purchase any chemicals you need to show proof of your cert, quite simples...anyone can pick up the phone and order at most places, you can even buy from ebay lol..!!

"it would HELP if it was made legal that to purchase any chemicals you need to show proof of your cert"

This point was raised at the recent Pesticides Roadshow. The problem with this, it seems, is that a certificate is not proof that anyone possessing one, is the actual owner of it.

Does make one wonder if a certificate is actually valid if one was challenged whilst applying pesticides.

I also believe there is another practical issue relating to businesses with staff in that the person ordering/buying it on behalf of the company may not be the user (ie your admin or purchasing staff) - that would need to resolving....

Gary maybe all Internet chemical sales could be banned online, like the stihl policy no internet sales, so you need to go instore to purchase, show your licence with photographic proof, surely this would cut at least 50% of dodgy spraying.

Phil does that mean most liecenses don't have a picture on of your self ? As my licence has my photo embossed into it like my driving licence issured from Rees Heath 2010.

My license doesn't have a photo. I'm not sure when photos on pesticide certificates were introduced.
