Best verge/banking mower

Anyone got any suggestions on banking mowing ???

I currently have a few contracts with banks/verges, I have a 30" Hayter Condor but its struggling with the slope and also a little small at 30"

I have seen posts and Scags/Ferris etc but have no experience using them

Any suggestions welcome

Also looking to spend around £1500/£2000

  • I had a ferris on demo. Used it on slopes around 40 degrees and it coped well. It had the twin wheel kit fitted though.

I think tyre choice is a important factor. I would go for agricultural type tyres for slopes.

I just need to save up now as they aren't cheap
  • My 52" scag with the double wheels can cope well on slopes 30/40 deg only on chevron tyres.

2k should get you a good one.

p.s. ive found the scags sit well on the hills where the ferris want to slide down....

    • In addition to the scag maybe have a look at getting a humus deck for it, works like a flail but it is a corkscrew of TCT teeth will for through most things.

  • what about if the slope was a lot steeper maybe 60 degrees?

      Petrol flymo on a rope?
60 degrees is really steep would not fancy that much myself unless it was only small

Should add that I don't have one and I've not done it but I'm sure I remember seeing someone doing it somewhere
    • dont think any machine would handle that gradient. strimmer / flymo i think.

250kg/300kg machines wouldnt cope on that :(

      • I do one with a strimmer thats around 45 deg. its quite long 1000m and 2m tall with trees. I use a poly cut on the strimmer which works well before blowing it off.

Side arm flail/digger mounted flail or robo mower. It's beyond stupid to try to cut that with anything else. Especially if it involves a guy standing on the bank.

For anyone cutting banks or verges you should read this PDF first.

It also lists different machines with their capabilities.
