  • come on boys and girls there must be someone out there who knows?

  • Is there much sign of life?
I'm not too experienced with balance ponds but I'm presuming that if there are a good number of insects, bugs, animals then you are doing alright?
  • I haven't dealt a lot with ponds but I would have said from the photo that its starting to look too congested. Thats my gut feeling. Give it another year and it'll be out of hand, I'm no expert but I was thinking the more reed the less space to buffer the water in and out.

  • I would say it's a good 1/3rd reeds

Do the balance ponds discharge into an environment agency controlled watercourse or are they self contained ?

  • Oh a third full of reeds, sorry, thought it was a lot more than that. In that case I don't think thats too bad.

  • Discharge to eat controlled water course.

As they then discharge 'you/landowner'' will be responsible for the outfall water quality. I assume there are interceptor catch tanks to seperate out any hard surface water contimantion (ie oil etc), with the reeds perfoming secondary mechanical and bio filtering. I think from memory wer were told to ensure that min 25% of pond was given over to reeds etc, but ensuring there is sufficient 'flow' capability from inlet to outfall.

If it's a self contained pond, then it's more a subjective decision about not letting the pond silt/close up. If it gets standing water, then some form of vegatation is preferably to ensure water does not get stagnent.

At the balance ponds we 'look' after on business parks, we subcontract the inteceptor tanks to be sucked clean several times a year and the ponds maintained (cleared) every couple of years. One issue we found is that the spoil can be considered 'contaminated' waste if you try to remove from site. We had to construct a bunded area area adjacent and spread the spoil out to drain.
