Anyone know why ?

Does anyone have any idea why this David Austin white rose that belongs to one of my customers, should have produced a pink bloom ? It is part of the bush, not separate, and not two roses planted together. Can anyone help ? Thanks .

  • its called a sport - its how new varieties are often formed!
Ive seen this similar on a dog rose - whole white bush but one branch throwing white with purpulish tinted edges (*very faint) year after year. Happens sometimes

    • Thank you .....  a great help :-)

The David Austin becomes the Davina Austin! :) Looks very pretty though must have been a bit of a surprise!

    • It certainly WAS a surprise, but like you say, its very pretty. Thanks for replying :-)

  • Same as a variegated shrub putting out a completely green shoot.

Only other possibility would be if it's from below a graft?

    • Never thought about the variegated shrub comparison .... thank you :-)

I got to Know Peter Catt back in the 1980's.

Peter is famed for his discovery of Choisya Sundance. He discovered a pale yellow sport growing on Choisya ternata, nurtured it and then reproduced from it (it's always the acid test to get an exact reproduction from a sported cutting).

This single sport became Choisya ternata Sundance and it made Peter a lot of money.

    • Perhaps I should "patent" it now ;-) Thanks for your reply :-)
