We mow a field once a fortnight with our ride-on mower.  The field has moles and the mole hills are full of pebbles. Although we spread out the mole hills (can be as many as 40 some weeks), its impossible to remove all the pebbles so we use an old Westwood ride-on.  Obviously the blades take a bit of beating and quite quickly they wear to the point that they don't overlap and leave an uncut strip down the middle.  So, instead of paying £80 every couple of months for new blades, I wondered if I could swap the blades for strimmer cord somehow?  We have a big Allen "Flymo" that uses cord and it works well on rough ground.

Anyone done this or have other suggestions?

Darren

      1. Good point

      2. We are having to do multiple passes at the moment but obviously its taking far longer.

  • Would it not be easier to call a pest controller and get rid of the moles?

It's a big field surrounded by other big fields so I wouldn't have thought that was viable was it?

  • I'd look in to flail mowers

I may have to but as it's an hourly rate job and we don't have anything else like it I'm having to watch costs.

The mower blade boss would not spin fast enough anyway I shouldn't think.
Circa 3200 rpm I would imagine strimmers work best at far higher revs than that

Thanks for your input gents. Maybe we need to tow a flymo around behind the ride-on. Although that idea doesn't sound that easy to do safely.

You could try and get a Wessex flail to tow behind the mower?

DR Scout wheeled corded strimmer - designed to handle long grass with pre cut, 4 cord spool, either push or driven. We have a bladed ATM version.

Often available hire but not that expensive to buy basic version.
