Hi all,

Well i've just had 3.6K worth of Stihl equipment and lawnmower replaced after a theft. What additional things have you done after such....

I've taken all photos of ALL equipment, serial numbers, name plates, etc etc.

Used a police permanent ultra violet marker. (not that this will stop theft )

I've priced up added internal security but very expensive for both vans

The best D loops, chains and best padlocks come in at £350 for each van.

What things have you added.

Paranoid ! - YES !

Use SelectDNA or SmartWater and register.

Search LJN and there's further information....

Buy or hire a Dremel drill and engrave something - an asset number, business name or as last resort a post code ( debate is out on this one ) on key pieces of kit - like deck, crankcase etc ( not on easily removable or replaceable items ).

I really wanted to paint all our kit pink, just don't have the heart to do it!

Been there, done that, bloody works mate, not had a "hot pink" Stihl hedge cutter stolen yet....;-)

Were they stolen while kept in the van overnight? If so, don't keep them in there!

Security dead locks, a tracker and alarm for all our vans.

Heavy duty chains and locks, lots of them, make it harder to nick your gear than the next guys. You can also get cable alarms where when the cable is cut, a deafening noise goes off
  • Thank for all your comments - I'm going to get a cable for both vans with one of those 120/130 db screeching alarms, and wrap around all the tools thats are hanging high or low.

I'm also thinking of getting all the gear dna painted - https://www.selectadna.co.uk/ this website recommended by GarkRk charges £49.95 which goes up to 50 pieces of equipment. Ive still to look into the smartwater tomorrow.

    Thanks

    Andy

  • Unfortunately, I don't think marking/engraving/smartwater will really deter thieves much................. they won't find the markings till after they've nicked them plus if they're for their own use or selling on to someone else, will the new buyer even care? I've bought the odd secondhand Stihl equipment.... never checked for smartwater or if there was any engraving, would just assume a previous owner had just sold it on and not removed the marks.  Sturdy cables through the handles etc will certainly help but don't leave stuff in the van overnight if it can be avoided. I picked up a "driveway alarm" from Aldi for £15.  100 metre range. Stuck it up above the garage door, put the receiver in the bedroom and it wakes me up at night if anyone comes near the garage door............. had a bit of trouble with the cats to start with so had to adjust the angle sensor a bit. .

You have experience of using SmartWater or SelectDNA and the associated labels then ?

People should take due diligence when buying equipment from fleaBay.......I would have thought anyone in this industry would have taken extra care to check ownership of second hand gear given all the thieving scroats out there....

"Assumption" is the mother of all FUp's.

      • I got quite a surprise last year. I saw one of our blowers on  Ebay before we'd even noticed it had gone missing !

      • I had "Smartwater" on a motorcycle and even had the reg number engraved on many of the components.................. the bike was nicked, broken up for parts and never seen again unfortunately.

Shame the people who bought the items didn't check them.........

          What would you recommend   ?
