Advice: building standing stone water feature

Just about to build a water feature using a 1M high purple schist standing stone - pre-drilled by CED. It is to be set over a sunken reservoir with slate chippings around the base.

I know that you can buy ready made bases from the like of Finia (?), but the ones I have seen that will carry the estimated 400kg weight seem to be too large to fit into the space available - about 1M square.

Does anyone have any experience of building such a thing - and advice on the simplest way to construct - ideally I don't want to go to the extent of making an in-situ concrete base/reservoir?

Thanks.

  • Hi there, A customer of mine has something similar to what you're planning, although i didn't build it personally. Their reservoir is a raised circular stone wall (like a traditional well) with a heavy duty grate set into it. The stone sits on this, will slate chippings around to cover the the grate. A section of the grate lifts out for access to the pump etc.

Looks tidy enough and been there 9 years and counting...
