Advice about Stihl fs 55r strimmer

Hi thinking of purchasing used Stihl fs 55r combi strimmer on ebay. After reading some reviews online im now in two minds; mainly due to power issues as it might be a bit too powerfull for my needs. I will mostly be using it for just occasional small garden grass strimming (edges, round trees ect) and maybe some taller bush. I also like the combi idea because i can attach a hedge cutter if needs be.

Does anyone use this model, if so what do you think of them, are they powerfull enough, any issues with them?

Thanks for any response

  • Hi Roger,  I use one, and have done for the past 12 years, apart from one getting nicked a few years back, I've never had a problem with them.  I use it mainly for edging around gardens, trees etc.  I have used to strim flower meadows where the brush and grass was quite long and its fine with that.  I have also used a metal cutting blade on one too and didnt have any issues. Only diff is I have the bike handle as to the loop handle, I find them more comfortable to use.  Hope this helps, Ian

Ive not used a fs55 I have an fs85 and it's good if a little big and heavy for edging grass etc. get one with more power than you think you need if using for hedges as they require decent power to give a clean finish in my opinion.

I'm not sure it will be "too powerful" for your needs, as Richard says if you intend to do hedge cutting with it you need the torque and power for the job, the FS 55 kombi will cut but if I was shelling out for a kombi engine to run all my attachments id have to go for something more along the lines of the Stihl Km90r, gives you more grunt....

I maybe wrong, but a FS is an entry level strimmer, for a Kombi powerhead it would be a KM55 or 56/90/100/130 (as in K standing for Kombi) ?

Very true Gary, km56 rather than the Fs55, same engine if I remember right? Still for using with hedge cutter head id go for the Km90, you need the extra power imo...
    • Yes you are correct the FS55 is an entry level strimmer. Any Kombi engines start with KM. Personally if you are looking for a kombi for hedge work and trimming then maybe a KM90 or 100? the 130 is a bit much for streaming with loop handles.

        The old KM55 & KM85 are/were the traditional 2 stroke screamers, with the 90/100/130 being 4mix

I think the KM55 went to KM56 last year or 2013

We still have a KM85R which is my Fav :)

  • Thanks for the feedback, it really is a minefield choosing tools as there's so many available. The sf55r is a just above the entry range for strimmers apparently which should suit my needs. As long as there are no obvious issues with them i probably go ahead and buy one. I just wanted to see what you hardy gardeners who use them day in day out thought of them and if there was anything i had missed. Thanks again

The FS is classed a high-end domestic/light commercial so as along as you're not going to give it hell it'll be fine for trimming. Suspect you'll be limited to 2mm line but that;s enough for grass and softish green growth
