Advertising in "Your Home and Garden" mag

I would like to ask if anyone had any experience of advertising through this publication ?

I have just signed up (but not paid for yet) quarter page entries in their free mag . Am I making a big mistake??

Any input would be appreciated .

  • No experience of that publication but I pay £49 for 3 months worth of adverts (quarter page) which goes out to 10000 houses and which gives me business every month!

I'd look at local directories if I was you rather than pay that sort of money!

  • You know I thought of stopping the advertising but glad I didn't - two autumn clear ups this week :) Apart from August this year has been pretty OK actually.

wow £520 ,,,must be rich julius is that including vat ?? bit of a wrong time to advertise ? i dont bother this time of year , rely on word of mouth . id rather put the money into a decent website ,gets me a lot of work

  • We did this one this year to try out some new advertising, yet to have one call.. says alot.

  • "and it was kept on the bottom shelf below the Gardeners' World magazine."

I would have thought you dripping in diamonds would have been top shelf stuff Gaynor.

  • To reply seriously to your topic, my own experience with print advertising has been vey unsatisfactory, marketing people regard a three hundred percent return as good value so if your £520 spend brought you in £1560 of extra work that would be acceptable in their terms. I would ideally want my advertising costs to be well under 5% of sales for me to think they were acceptable, not a third.

A few years ago there was a marketing company more or less next door to us on our industrial estate, one day I was walking to the van when a piece of paper blew across my path, picking it up I saw it was a marketing plan devised by this company for a product launch, the product could have sold for £7 but in order to cover the marketing costs it was priced at £28.

The marketing company went bust the office and its' accompanying warehouse went then to a double glazing company.

When I am tempted to take up an offer of magazine advertising, I get an old copy of the publication and phone up the advertisers who are not competing for my type of business and get their view on whether it is good value for money, I usually go with the results of my research, which means I spend very little money on magazine advertising.  I often offer to try advertising for payment by results I have offered as much as £5 a lead, as of yet no print publication has accepted the offer.

  • As has been mentioned before, local parish magazines are well worth a go and much better value and take up than the 'rep sell' ads for 'police magazines, estate agents packages, etc etc..

I can't believe this company is still operating.

I think this company targets new businesses, we were 'conned' in February 2006.

It all seemed very plausible, the mags were to be distributed by 2 local garden centres, one hadn't heard of them, the other had, even had some boxes of mags, but they had nothing of interest in them.  3 or 4 ads and not much else. I still have a copy of one of our mags, we were meant to have several...

Well Julius, if it's the same company, I did the same two yeras ago - half a page and never got one enquiry from it. The garden centre 'promoting' it did nothing to make their customers aware of the magazine and it was kept on the bottom shelf below the Gardeners' World magazine.

Total waste of money for me! I would never recommend them to anyone.

  • Thanks mate I have cancelled . There was even a £120 surcharge for paying in monthly installments.
