A First for me!

Smashed a patio door whilst strimming today. Had about 3 metres of strimming left to do as well, errant stone that found its way there. Luckily the client was fine about it and have claimed off their home insurance. Did give me a bit of a shocker though when I heard the noise and looked round to see the glass broken.

As they say try something new everyday.

  • My other half works with me fairly regularly. A few weeks ago she cut through a hidden telephone cable whilst trimming a hedge.

Client needed their internet for work!!

Bottom line was lots of apologies, a free lawn cut and payment of client´s £130 BT repair bill.

      • Tom I didn´t. My other half went over to the house when the BT engineer came to repair it. He said it would be a chargeable repair.

He took all the cable from the cut in to the house out, and replaced the lot for some reason.

It´s fair to say I expected we would have to pay it.

Ah, just had a quick look for BT´s rules, found the answer here

        A charge will apply where.....

        • The fault is due to damage caused by someone at the customer's premises.

That was us, looks like you got away with it :-)

    • if the cable is just strung through the hedge it will not conform to British standards i.e. telephone cables should be 1Ft below ground this also covers cable TV lines which I have yet to see as they are normally found just under the  surface about a inch down

You're lucky. I did the same recently and had to pay £200 quid :-(
    • Ouch!

  • I did exactly the same thing last week, smashing both panes of a double glazed unit. I phoned the customer, sorted the repair and refit, and took the hit... £215.

  • Haven't done a patio door but I did do two car windows in 2 days

Took the hit on it as it was cheaper than my excess....

    • Hi there.  Thats what I take out insurance for. However having been in the job fro 8 years now I reckon that I could pay for a street of patio doors and phone lines. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

  • I hadn't broken anything in 8 years of business until a few weeks ago, then smashed the side window in my van and a page of glass in a greenhouse in 2 days. £45 fixed the van, £10 the greenhouse, not too expensive luckily.
  • I've done all of the above over the years, patio doors, windows, car windows including my own last week on my new pride and joy Ford Ranger (rear window) I paid for them all including BT a few times accept once when the engineer told me they couldn't be bothered to chase people any more. Two days ago I 'lent' a client our new tracked cherry picker (that we haven't even used yet) and they managed to bend two arms on it so it is now out of use and could be for a month or so at a very large cost.
