  • It would obviously have an effect, but the minimum and living wage goes up here annually anyway, so we make our adjustments.

    If the minimum wage increases it reduces the state benefits handed out to employees on minimum wage through tax credits and the like, effectively these state benefits subsidise those low wage employers.

    So there are obvious advantages to the government and tax payers in reducing the dependency on state benefit payments to those on minimum wage.

    • I personally it would be a good thing to get basic wages up to the where no benefits are payable, then everyone would be on a level playing-field. As far as I remember there were no work related benefits or minimum wage controls before (about) 1980, and everyone seemed to manage well enough then. 

      The trouble with all these benefits is that they can make people benefit dependent, and not very interested in working.
